Like all S58-equipped BMWs, the F97/F98 oil cooler is mounted underneath the engine, mere inches from the road surface. This means the oil cooler, a critical component of the engine oiling system, is prone to damage from road debris, potholes, parking blocks, speed bumps, and other unavoidable road hazards. In the event of an impact, the cooler's aluminum tubes and fins may rupture, rapidly expelling engine oil and risking low oil pressure. Despite housing the lifeblood of your engine, only the factory plastic belly pan prevents such damage to your oil cooler.

The entire skid plate assembly is constructed from robust 4GA (4.83mm) 5052 aluminum. Unlike the factory undertray, the Turner Motorsport skid plate provides a solid barrier between your oil cooler and the road, protecting it (and other chassis underpinnings) from harsh terrain and road debris. Its sturdy one-piece construction spans from the front bumper to the front subframe, protecting everything in its path.

To improve factory oil cooler performance, Turner's engineers focused on optimizing airflow efficiency through the core. While the oil cooler is positioned beneath the engine, it relies on airflow from the front air dam for cooling. As air enters the front grille, it moves through the core before being expelled via the skid plate. With the factory belly pan installed, mediocre airflow patterns result in air bypassing the core, reducing overall cooler efficiency at speed. Moreover, the factory belly pan features a recessed portion for the oil cooler, creating a clear path for debris to impact the core. To resolve this oversight, Turner engineers designed laser-cut, flared air channels at the front of the assembly. The skid plate features a forward-angled bend at the front of these channels, creating a protective lip that will deflect and catch potential debris. At the rear, an opposite bend ensures proper airflow through the oil cooler.
